here's a quick recap before i launch into my disgusting story of the day: after divya and i moved into this apt, we had quite a few problems with pests. of course, there was the infamous mouse which i had mentioned in an entry before. (he, by the way, made a few appearances in recent days until ricardo found a hole in our living room closet - coincidentally the mouse's favorite 'hiding place' - and sealed it!) i also had some very unwelcome, unsightly visitors in my attached bathroom ever since i moved in... ROACHES. yes. they are beyond doubt the most disgusting creatures, ever. i was so beyond mortified when i saw them in my room/bathroom. *shudder* anyway, so we complained to ricardo about all of this, and he immediately brought in the exterminator. that guy came about a week and a half ago. he sprayed all these things, sealed up cracks and holes, etc, etc. the next couple of days i found quite a few dead roaches in my shower. since then i hadn't seen a roach in my bathroom or room or anywhere in the apt, so i was at ease, thinking the extermination did its job. little did i know...
so, this morning i got a nasty lil surprise. (i'm cringing as i'm writing this, because even thinking about it is making me queasy inside!) i have this pretty bright orange silky drape over my bed. as in, it is directly over my head as i am sleeping in bed. it drapes over both sides of my bed, but it doesn't cover the whole bed. the drape's width as it hangs from the ceiling over my head will only go as far as maybe the midsection of my stomach. they are not very long, so they don't even touch the floor. the way i have them pinned up, they are sort of hugging the walls on either side. ANYWAY.
i woke up at like 6 because the right side of my mouth was hurting (my wisdom tooth is pushing out on the bottom and it's not a pleasant feeling). i was rolling around in bed for a little, and then fell back asleep. my alarm went off at 7:20, and i snoozed till about 7:35. i finally decided it was time to get up. so i reached over and turned on the lamp next to my bed, then put my head back down for a second... and looked up... AND THEN FREAKED THE FUCK OUT BECAUSE THERE WAS A ROACH ON MY ORANGE DRAPE! RIGHT ON TOP OF MY HEAD! oh my god, it was so fuckin disgusting! and scary! and ugly! seeing its fat dark shape contrasted on my bright orange drape was probably the most startling and heartstopping image, especially since it was clinging to it right over my head! i immediately jumped out of bed, and then had to figure out a way to get it off my drape and somehow kill it, without having it land on my bed. right. NOT an easy task as i later found out when i brought out our Swiffer broom/mop to kill it with...
but to make a long story short, i somehow killed it. it took awhile though. i even had to squish it a couple of times with my gym sneakers before it commpletely died. the damn thing was HUGE, almost 2 inches long! ew, ew, ew!
and now, all i can think about at work is how the fuck it got UP there on my drapes to begin with... i've seen roaches on the floor, but i've never seen them on WALLS! but i guess i was pretty ignorant about them, because after doing a whole bunch of research this morning, i found out a lot of things: the roaches i've been seeing in my room/bathroom are sometimes called 'water bugs' because these 'oriental roaches' are mainly found in damp areas, bathrooms, near areas where water-pipes are situated, basements (bingo!), etc; they can pretty much walk on ANY surface, even up walls (wtf?!) and upside-down on ceilings (oh my fuckin god?!), and they are known to reproduce pretty quickly.
that's it. i'm moving out.
seriously though, i've NEVER lived in an apt that had a roach problem... and i am beyond uncomfortable with these surprise visits. i will have to talk to ricardo again today and tell him to bring that damn exterminator back. i'm hoping the one i killed today was just a stray one that somehow escaped the extermination from before, but let's face it, that's just me lying to make myself feel better about this whole thing. chances are there are more of them crawling around, somewhere, and they need to get wiped out, now.
EWWWWWWWWWWWW! :(

you have experience trying to get rid of them?
An exterminator would be my only idea, I guess!
this is the problem with living in the city... it is infested with pests!
In our previous home we had a racoon enter our house on a summer afternoon! It fire entered our garage and we have a door in the garage that links you to the inside of our house and through that door it entered our house but before entering it took a big racoon dump and we began to smell this horrible stench and yeh...my dad noticed the racoon standing in the middle of our house and my parents basically went on a wild racoon chase and it exited our home, but it took them hours to remove the racoon dump and to get rid of the horrible smell :/
Anyhow. I thought you were going to say you woke up with one in your mouth... lol.. I've woken up with one in BED with me.. crawling on my leg. THAT was pretty gross. But I'm so used to them it's tragic, I'm not scared of them anymore.. they just make me feel disgusting. :/ But since then the new baits I'm using have gotten rid of them (thank God!)... before the baits I had at least 3 or so crawling around my kitchen/bathroom when I got up in the morning.. during the day.. and even more at night. I hated using sprays, so I normally got a folded up paper towel and squished em. :/ Sad thing is, they still kept coming.. no matter how many I killed.
So all I can say is, you don't have it THAT bad yet. You live in New York. It's a dirty city, cockroaches will be a problem in most places you go because even if you're clean... the bloke next door might be growing them under his kitchen sink and leaving scraps out for them to travel next door to your place. Maybe if you find a new building, you'll have a better chance of being pest-free (fewer cracks and holes to find their way into your place).
Lol and by the way, I have a mouse now. :p It was under my cupboard snacking on the rat bait. haha I suppose it only has a short time to live.
This entire post has been so traumatizing.
and oh my god, i don't know what i would do if i woke up with one in bed with me!!! yiiiiikes.
maybe not many do in America? :) I'm from Australia..
I dont know if this is true or not but I was told it by a girl in my group at high school back in the day. It has traumatized me ever since.
APPARENTLY if you wake up in the morning and you dont have that sandy like sleep in the corner of your eye its because during the night, while you have slept, a roach has been on your face and eaten it!!! Now I know, when you think about this logically it just CANT be correct, but it still traumatizes me to this day almost 15 years later.
Oh now I've probably traumatized you even more - sorry :/
but i doubt that's true... i mean, i would definitely FEEL it if the roach was on my freakin face!
We have squirrels in my house in Cleveland though, ever since my final year of high school. They've been living in our roof on and off ever since then. My mom woke up in the middle of the night one to find one right on her chest, staring at her. We've put up traps every so often since then, but to very little avail...
oh my god, squirrels can be pests too? man, i'm way too ignorant when it comes to these pests... i obviously don't know anything... but that's also because i've been lucky enough to not deal with them in the past!
One time, they came into my parents' house from my mom's house plant that she would put outside, and they crawled into my room and were under my bed and under dressers and closets, OMG it was so so so gross! I know how you feel completely. I hope you can put traps and stuff out for them *hugs*
Ew, I'm all itchy and grossed out :(
I've given myself the goosebumps now.
if you are laughing, than its the concocted mind else it quite a descent soln :P
I had one in my shoe once, when I was in Australia. I never check my shoes before I put them on, but this one time I did and this big disgusting roach fell out and I screamed really loud. I am SO thankful I checked my shoe that one time though, I probably would've screamed even louder if that roach had been squashed by my foot. It makes me shudder just thinking about it.
and i totally agree - roaches ARE the most disgusting out of them all.
at least they don't compare to the big, fat, nasty flying roaches of india.. EW EW EW
When I was young I was at my Grandma's place where they have this HUGE garden - like a farm really, and I foolishly slept with the windows open - for the fresh air. I woke up in the middle of the night cause a roach was running across my face! I think that incident has affected me for life!
